Eleni Topaloudi was a 21-year-old university student who was raped and killed on Rhodes in 2018. Her case became a focal point in Greece’s public discussion of femicide and sexual violence.

The documented court outcome

Kathimerini reported that an Athens appeals court upheld the convictions of two men on 20 May 2022. The report records the lower court’s sentences of life imprisonment and an additional 15 years. This summary describes that reported appeal outcome; it does not claim to catalogue every subsequent legal proceeding.

Why this case belongs in the record

Remembering a victim should not require retelling the details of her suffering. The wider questions concern sexual autonomy, victim-blaming and the way institutions and media respond to violence. “Femicide” provides a gender-related analytical framework; it should not be confused with the precise criminal charges in a particular judgment.
