Berta Cáceres

Honduras · Lenca people · 1971–2016

Known as Berta Cáceres, she was a Lenca organiser and co-founder of COPINH who defended Indigenous communities and rivers against destructive development. She received the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2015 and was killed in 2016.

Her work connects land, collective rights and the danger faced by environmental defenders. Her legacy belongs to an ongoing community struggle rather than a story of individual courage alone.

“Let us wake up, humankind! We are out of time.”

Goldman Environmental Prize acceptance speech (2015), translated excerpt.
