Elizabeth Cady Stanton
United States · 1815–1902
Stanton helped organise the Seneca Falls Convention and drafted the Declaration of Sentiments. She argued that marriage, property, education and political participation were connected questions rather than separate grievances.
Her contributions were substantial, but her record also includes racist arguments during struggles over suffrage. A careful history keeps both the challenge to sexism and the exclusions within that challenge visible.
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women are created equal.”
Declaration of Sentiments, Seneca Falls Convention (1848).
