Ella Baker

United States · 1903–1986

Baker helped develop the organising networks behind the American civil-rights movement and supported the formation of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. She emphasised local knowledge and collective leadership.

Her work challenges histories built entirely around celebrated individuals. Movements also depend on people who listen, connect groups and create room for others to develop political confidence.

“Strong people do not need strong leaders.”
