Nawal El Saadawi
Egypt · 1931–2021
A physician and writer, El Saadawi connected women’s bodily autonomy with economic inequality, political power and social convention. Her fiction and nonfiction challenged practices that controlled women’s lives and voices.
She faced censorship and imprisonment, yet continued to write and debate. Her work offers a forceful example of feminism as criticism of several overlapping forms of power.
“I believe in the equal exchange of ideas, and networking.”
Interview in The Nation, 21 March 2011; excerpt.
