Qiu Jin

China · 1875–1907

Qiu Jin was a poet, educator and revolutionary who challenged restrictions on women, including footbinding and limited access to education. She studied in Japan and participated in revolutionary organising in China.

Her writing links bodily freedom with political transformation. The short poem excerpt below comes through Jonathan Spence’s English translation, rather than being presented as an original English statement.

“With heated heart arouse all women’s spirits.”

Preoccupation (1904), translated by Jonathan Spence in The Gate of Heavenly Peace (1982).
