Rachel Carson
United States · 1907–1964
Carson was a marine biologist and writer whose Silent Spring brought the ecological effects of pesticides into public debate. She combined scientific reporting with a clear account of interdependence in the natural world.
Her work faced attacks that included gendered attempts to discredit her authority. She belongs in this collection for changing public understanding and insisting that powerful institutions answer questions about harm.
