Shirin Ebadi
Iran · born 1947
Ebadi is a lawyer and former judge whose human-rights work has included defending women and children. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003.
Her writing challenges claims that faith and equality are necessarily incompatible. Her career also shows the risks faced by legal advocates who contest the institutions and interpretations used to restrict rights.
“It is not religion that binds women, but the selective dictates of those who wish them cloistered.”
Iran Awakening (2006), p. 204.
