Wangarĩ Maathai

Kenya · 1940–2011

Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement, linking tree planting with women’s livelihoods, environmental protection and democratic participation. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.

Her work made the relationship between ecological conditions and political power concrete. Water, land and fuel were not separate from women’s daily labour or their ability to shape public decisions.

“Sustainable management of our natural resources will promote peace.”
