Angela Davis

United States · born 1944

Davis is a scholar and activist whose work connects racism, gender, class and the prison system. Her books and public organising have contributed to debates about abolition and the meanings of collective freedom.

Her approach asks readers to consider institutions, not only individual prejudice. Studying her arguments means engaging with their political commitments and the alternatives they propose.

“Prisons do not disappear problems, they disappear human beings.”

Masked Racism: Reflections on the Prison Industrial Complex (1998), excerpt.
