Audre Lorde
United States · 1934–1992
Lorde brought poetry, essays and activism together in a body of work attentive to race, sexuality, class and difference. She challenged movements that treated some women’s experiences as universal while silencing others.
Her writing does not ask people to erase difference for the sake of unity. It asks how difference can become a source of knowledge and collective strength.
“Your silence will not protect you.”
The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action, collected in Sister Outsider (1984), p. 41.
