United States · 1952–2021

Writing as bell hooks, Gloria Jean Watkins made feminist theory accessible while examining race, class, education, love and popular culture. She insisted that feminism address systems of domination rather than only access for a privileged few.

Her work moves between criticism and the question of how people learn to live differently. Teaching and everyday relationships are political subjects in her writing.

“Feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression.”

Feminism Is for Everybody (2000), definition reproduced in later editions.
