Betty Friedan
United States · 1921–2006
The Feminine Mystique challenged the claim that domestic life alone should fulfil women’s ambitions. Friedan also helped found the National Organization for Women, connecting public debate with institutional campaigning.
Her account focused heavily on particular middle-class experiences and was criticised for exclusions. Reading it alongside Black, working-class and queer feminist writers makes those limits visible.
“The problem lay buried, unspoken for many years in the minds of American women.”
The Feminine Mystique (1963), opening sentence.
