Rosa Parks
United States · 1913–2005
Parks was an experienced civil-rights organiser before her refusal to surrender her bus seat helped catalyse the Montgomery bus boycott. Her activism extended far beyond that single moment.
Remembering her only as a tired passenger obscures political preparation and collective action. Her own account insists on the decision to resist, within a longer struggle against racist violence and exclusion.
“No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in.”
Rosa Parks: My Story, with James Haskins (1992), p. 116.
