Fannie Lou Hamer

United States · 1917–1977

Hamer organised for voting rights in Mississippi and helped build the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. Her testimony made the violence used to maintain racial exclusion impossible to dismiss as an abstract political dispute.

She also worked on material survival and community support. Her life connects the ballot with food, safety, healthcare and the resources needed to exercise a right.

“I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.”

Reported in Freedomways (1965); also used as her epitaph.
