Doria Shafik
Egypt · 1908–1975
Shafik campaigned for Egyptian women’s political rights through writing, organising and direct action. Her movement challenged the exclusion of women from the institutions making decisions about their lives.
Her story also includes political marginalisation and isolation. It shows why the achievement of a formal right should not erase the people and conflicts that made it possible.
“Women as half the nation had to be represented in Parliament, and justly protected.”
As quoted in Women in Middle Eastern History (1991); excerpt.
