Jane Addams

United States · 1860–1935

Addams co-founded Hull-House in Chicago and worked on social reform, women’s rights and peace. Her approach connected democratic ideals with the daily realities of neighbourhood life.

Her work asks whether security enjoyed by a few can remain secure in an unequal society. Settlement-house organising also invites critical questions about class, paternalism and who decides what a community needs.

“the good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain”

How Would You Uplift the Masses?, 4 February 1892; excerpt.
