Kalliroi Parren

Greece · 1861–1940

Parren founded Efimeris ton Kyrion, a newspaper written by women, in 1887. She argued for women’s education and access to work, helping create institutions and a public language for women’s claims in Greece.

Her approach also retained some conventional ideas about women’s roles. Reading her in context reveals a movement negotiating the boundaries of what its society would permit.

“Εγώ, Κυρίαι μου, μένω πολύ ευχαριστημένη ούσα γυνή”
