Melina Mercouri

Greece · 1920–1994

Mercouri was an actor, an opponent of Greece’s military dictatorship and later a minister of culture. She became a prominent advocate for the return of the Parthenon sculptures to Greece.

She is included as an influential woman in cultural and political life, not as a stand-in for all Greek feminism. Her career shows how artistic visibility can become a form of public advocacy.

“You must understand what the Parthenon Marbles mean to us.”
