Millicent Fawcett

Britain · 1847–1929

Fawcett championed women’s suffrage through constitutional campaigning, public meetings and political organisation. She led the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies and also supported women’s education.

Her work shows the importance of sustained organising alongside more dramatic moments of protest. The history of suffrage includes different strategies, competing priorities and gains that initially excluded many women.

“Courage calls to courage everywhere, and its voice cannot be denied.”

The Women’s Victory—and After (1920), recalling the events of 1913.
