Nadia Murad

Iraq · Yazidi community · born 1993

Murad survived ISIS captivity and became an advocate for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence and for the Yazidi community. She shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018.

Her advocacy demands accountability as well as support for rebuilding lives. She should be understood as a person with ambitions and a political voice, not reduced to the violence she survived.

“With the voice and participation of women, we can make fundamental changes in our communities.”

Nobel lecture, 10 December 2018; official English text reproduced by the UN.
