Rigoberta Menchú

Guatemala · born 1959

Menchú is a K’iche’ Maya advocate for Indigenous rights and social justice who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992. Her public work brought international attention to violence and exclusion in Guatemala.

Her testimony and its reception have also been debated. Reading her work carefully means respecting Indigenous political agency while distinguishing personal testimony, collective history and independently verified events.

“There is no peace without justice. There is no peace without truth.”
