Susan B. Anthony

United States · 1820–1906

Anthony organised for women’s voting rights through speeches, petitions and sustained campaigning. Her arrest after voting in 1872 exposed the contradiction between democratic citizenship and women’s exclusion from the ballot.

Her legacy also requires attention to racial exclusions within the suffrage movement. Studying a prominent organiser need not mean endorsing every political choice she made.

“Join the union, girls, and together say Equal Pay for Equal Work.”

The Revolution, 18 March 1869; excerpt.
