Tawakkol Karman

Yemen · born 1979

A journalist and activist, Karman became a prominent voice in Yemen’s 2011 protest movement and shared that year’s Nobel Peace Prize. Her work connects freedom of expression with women’s participation in public life.

Her political positions have also generated debate. This profile records her role in nonviolent mobilisation without treating any individual as the voice of all Yemeni women.

“My position is determined by my beliefs, and I do not ask anyone’s permission.”
