Petitions that helped win the vote

The action

Campaigners led by Kate Sheppard organised major petitions in 1891, 1892 and 1893, bringing women’s demands to Parliament.

The change

The Electoral Act signed on 19 September 1893 made New Zealand the first self-governing country where women could vote in parliamentary elections.

What we can learn

Repeated, organised participation can turn an excluded group’s demands into legislative pressure. Voting rights are one part of political equality.

Read, ask, take part.

Read the underlying sources, distinguish a campaign’s demand from the final text, and ask organisations what they need today. A new provision does not guarantee protection on its own.
